Melaye said that although Obi has the potential to be president of Nigeria, it's still too early for him to take on that role.
Former lawmaker Dino Melaye has asked Peter Obi to wait before challenging the Nigerian presidency.
Melaye's video clip, which was shared on his Facebook page on July 1, 2022, showed his appeal . The former MP acknowledged that Obi was indeed a good product, but said it was not yet the time for him to pursue his presidential ambitions, adding that People's Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar was better suited for the purpose. He said:
“By the grace of God, he (Obi) has the potential to become president in the near future. I celebrate your success in advocating for a new Nigeria, and I am proud of your work. I congratulate you, but I would like to advise you that your time is not now. You have to wait your time.
"I've listened to your assumptions, arguments, deliveries and activities, and I can say that 90% of your activities are focused on reducing governance costs.
"You are very well-informed and intelligent, Nigerian. I know that tomorrow you will have a place in the world. But let's forget the social media drama and diaspora euphoria for today.
“The truth is we need a unifier and a Nigerian who can solve the problem of insecurity and who has intelligence on every security aspect of our national life.We need a Nigerian who will get information from Cameroon, Mali, Chad, Benin and others.
"We need a Nigerian who has the ability to solve problems of Boko Haram and bandits. He has information from neighboring countries and today the Nigerian is Atiku Abubakar," said Melaye. Obi is one of the front-line candidates ahead of the 2023 presidential election due to its growing popularity in the South and strong followership on social media.
